About this Site

I'd kill for more of these kind of sites to be in the wild. I love to be bumping into weird Frankenstein combos of Andy's (there he is again) blog post - quantum country, his evergreen notes, with some federated wiki ideas sprinkled in. In my dreams other people publish little sites like this, so I can pull the stuff locally, re-contextualize the atomic concepts contained within the sites, push them around a bit to make them fit my way of thinking, then link them into my existing knowledge graph, and finally publish them as part of new graphs in other compelling ways. In other... "Meadows". See?

do you need to write your own spaced repetition prompts?

The one thing to consider, however, is that externally authored spaced repetition prompts have some specific challenges compared to self-authored ones. Specifically, it's a problem if you either already know the material or you don't care about specific prompts. The problem is simple to overcome if you can maintain the deck of prompts. The problem is harder to address for sites that integrate spaced repetition prompts directly into them, like blog post - quantum country, which presume to know exactly which prompts you need to answer, when, and don't give the user much control over the experience.

my hacker news comment about canned prompts

Quantum Country violates this principle, since users are not making the cards. This violation was a major concern when we began working on Quantum Country. However, preliminary user feedback suggests it has worked out adequately. A possible explanation is that, as noted above, making good cards is a difficult skill to master, and so what users lose by not making their own cards is made up by using what are likely to be much higher-quality cards than they could have made on their own. In future, it’s worth digging deeper into this issue, both to understand it beyond informal models, and to explore ways of getting the benefits of active card making.”
